David Bruce Anecdotes
Anecdotes are usually short humorous stories. Sometimes they are thought-provoking or informative, not amusing.
Illnesses and Injuries
• As a small boy, comedian Louis Nye was very thin, and his Jewish mother took him to an Irish physician who said that to fatten up her son she needed to serve him bacon. This was very shocking because kosher bacon was unknown. However, his mother asked advice from his grandmother, who unhesitatingly recommended that for the boy’s health she should follow the doctor’s advice. His mother therefore purchased new kitchenware so that she wouldn’t cook and serve bacon on her kosher kitchenware. Whenever she fried bacon for her son, all three of them — grandmother, mother, and young son — used newspapers to waft the smell of frying bacon out of the kitchen window. (By the way, the bacon worked — Louis was a healthy-looking boy at his bar mitzvah.)
• Sometimes, nurses ask silly questions. When Quaker humorist Tom Mullen was in a hospital, he was standing up when he suddenly felt dizzy. He managed to buzz the nurses’ station before he passed out, and when the nurse arrived, he was lying on the floor, semi-conscious, trying to get up. The nurse looked down at him and then asked, “May I help you?” Mr. Mullen wishes today that he had been conscious enough to reply, “No, I’m just crawling about at 2 a.m. looking for loose change.”
• Julie Krone was racing when another jockey rode his horse into her horse. Her horse’s knees buckled, and Ms. Krone fell off. Looking up, she saw another horse running straight at her. The horse kicked her in the chest. Because the pain was so bad, all she could think was, “Pass out. Please pass out.” Nine months and two operations later, she was back on the track, racing.
• Female jockey Mary Bacon once suffered a serious concussion that left her unconscious and fighting for her life. Her mother sat with her, and a pleasant-looking man stopped by each morning. Eventually, her mother asked who the pleasant-looking man was. The hospital floor supervisor answered, “He’s the undertaker.” (Eventually, Ms. Bacon recovered and raced again.)
• In his later years, Pope John Paul II was ill or injured several times. In 1994, while getting out of the shower he fell and broke his leg. Immediately, he was rushed to a Catholic teaching hospital, where he had been admitted five times previously. He joked to the officials at the hospital, “You have to admire my loyalty.”
• Elite gymnasts work very hard, and they do get physically tired as well as physically injured. When elite gymnast Kerri Strug had to get bone scans on her shins, she kept falling asleep during the scans, thus ruining them and being forced to start them again.
• A nurse came in to give a patient a shot and asked him in which arm he wanted it. The patient — who disliked shots — thought for a moment and then said, “In your left arm, please.”
Insults
• A person was introduced to a deaf man. Not knowing much about deaf people, the person wrote “Can you read?” on a piece of paper, then he handed it to the deaf person. The deaf person read the question and was insulted by its ignorance, so he wrote back, “No, can you write?” By the way, one problem that deaf people have is trying to lip read the words of a person with a foreign accent.
• Groucho Marx once belonged to a theatrical club. However, after a fellow member complained about the quality of the members the club was getting, Groucho decided to resign, so he sent a telegram to the club, saying: “Please accept my resignation. I don’t want to belong to any club that would have me as a member.”
• Jackie Robinson feuded with sportswriter Mike Gaven. One day, when Mr. Gaven entered the Dodger dugout, Mr. Robinson told him, “You sports writers are always wrong.” Mr. Gaven replied, “You mean like when we voted you Most Valuable Player last year?”
• English entertainer Joyce Grenfell made a habit of being on time for appointments. Once, when an editor was late for a meeting with her, she telephoned his office and asked, “Is he usually unpunctual?”
Language
• Janette Porter was the daughter of a preacher. While she was in elementary school in the early part of the 20thcentury, a classmate whispered to her that she had just had an evil thought and asked what she should do. Janette whispered back, “Just think about flowers … and music … and JESUS.” Joy at finding exactly the right word to say made her say that word much too loudly, and her teacher and most of her classmates were shocked to hear the preacher’s daughter “curse.” As punishment, she had to stand in the corner of the classroom for an hour.

From The Book of Good Deeds 1914-1918: WORLD WAR I GOOD DEEDS:
EVACUATION
WHEN the Germans retreated from their position on the Somme and fell back to the Siegfried position in March 1917, the evacuated area was, by order of the Commander-in-Chief, leveled down completely so as to deprive the pursuing enemy of all natural cover. Not a tree, nor bush, nor hedge, nor fence was left standing; villages and farms went up in flames. The inhabitants were all collected in certain villages and housed in the Churches.
In Vraignes, a little village in the Somme district, on the afternoon of March 15th, a heartrending scene took place. It was the day that the villagers were to leave their homes and take refuge in the Church which alone was to be left standing amid the ruins. In the streets were to be seen old men and women dragging themselves to the House of God and trying painfully to save their dearest belongings; children crying in their mothers’ arms; boys and girls pushing the necessary belongings of the families in push carts to the church square; women weeping and casting one last look at their homes, soon to be demolished by the flames.
The soldiers of the 3rd Battalion of the 164th Infantry Regiment, fresh from the hell of the Somme, stood about the streets and for a moment watched unmoved this picture of desolation. Their hearts had become hardened by long fighting and the horrors of death. But this mood lasted only a moment, then a sudden movement went through the ranks. Here and there one turned away, and muttering something like, “Can’t bear it any longer,” hurried away. Others hastily passed their hands over their eyes; swallowed hard, or blew their noses.
“Come on, give them a hand!” the hoarse voice of an old soldier was suddenly heard.
Some of the older men, fathers of families, detached themselves from the groups, and took the burden from an old woman’s back and carried it to the church. An officer nodded approval. This example incited others, many joined in and lent a hand. Carts were drawn, trunks carried, chests dragged, children picked up, mothers comforted, the weak assisted. In the church sleeping places were made up with mattresses and piles of straw. Looks full of gratitude and warm shakings of hands were the remuneration. When the Battalion left, the inhabitants begged—“Why don’t you take us back with you?”

Hart, Bob: “Caitlin Kraus: Making her own kind of music.” The Athens News. 19 December 2023
“It was a song called ‘Garden’ that did it for me. Perhaps only when a musical artist writes deeply personal lyrics do their words become universal, belying the specifics of their own situation and emotions to touch others on an intimate level. That song and many other good ones are on the CD “Gone Beyond,” by Caitlin Kraus. It’s her second recorded collection (following “What Rises”) and is available through many outlets, including caitlinkrausmusic.bandcamp.com, Spotify and Apple Music.”…

It is a very special honor to have completed this music video for “Follow Me,” which was directed by the wonderful Adam Remnant who also recorded the song itself back in 2016. We collaborated on the concepts in the video and spent a chilly, beautiful spring day filming it with his talented students (listed below) at the Nelsonville, OH brick kilns, Hocking River, and surrounding neighborhood. For me, the lyrics and music of this song portray real imagery and memories that have grown dream-like with the passing of time, yet still remain formative and foundational. At its core, it is about transformation and being/becoming, but I hope the ambiguity and symbolism of the song and video also lead to your own interpretation and that you can find something resonant within it. Lyrics and digital/CD format available at caitlinkrausmusic.bandcamp.com. Music website at caitlinkrausmusic.com.
A huge and sincere thank you to Adam Remnant for his direction of the video and to the Hocking College students listed in the following credits: AC – Alex Rhinehart & Najayah Shepard; Grips – Alex Rhinehart, Alexis Pariseau, Najayah Shepard, Nate Ruhl, & Richard Valentine; On-set Photographer – Ivan Reardon
“Follow Me” is featured on the full-length 2020 release WHAT RISES and includes myself on vocals/guitar, Adam Remnant on bass/drums/keyboard, and Hannah Simonetti on violin. The song was recorded and mixed by Adam in Athens, OH while the full album was produced, mixed, and mastered by Bernie Nau at Peachfork Studios in Pomeroy, OH (https://peachforkstudios.com/).

Notes for “This Body”:
A song for the rights of all: the right to be safe in our bodies, the right to make decisions for our bodies, and the right to be who we are in our bodies. (Lyrics below.) I wrote this song […] out of the need to process my anger at women’s rights being taken away and for what this means for other rights down the line. A never-ending issue it seems, but one we can’t stop fighting for. A big thank you to Tom Riggs for taking footage of my first performance of this song with Mark Hellenberg on drums at The Union in Athens, OH.
Lyrics for “This Body”:
This body is temporary, but while it’s here / It’s not yours to hold captive in fear / This body is mine, it was never yours / So fuck your laws and gods and guns / I get to say what I put inside / I GET TO CHOOSE, IT IS MY RIGHT / This body is sacred, but only safe / When I’m in charge, you have no claim / This body is proud and wears the crown / Makes the decisions and won’t back down / I get to say what I put inside / I GET TO CHOOSE, IT IS MY RIGHT / And don’t tell me who I can love or about my identity / Don’t use your privilege to subject your patriarchy / I get to say what I put inside / I GET TO CHOOSE, IT IS MY RIGHT

OVRLD Austin Music First (6/13/2016): “On her new single ‘Waiting for the World,’ Caitlin Kraus’ sweetly shimmering voice rises out of an oceanic musical backing, giving the track a melancholic feel, like a reinterpretation of The Awakening’s bitter conclusion. Kraus’ voice is powerful but not in a bombastic sense, it’s instead devastating in its emotional richness. The well-arranged strings that emerge after the beginning of the song aid in this, making ‘Waiting for the World’ an excellent bit of chamber pop that stands out for the frequently unimaginatively produced singer songwriter tracks Austin is oversaturated with.”
